ADHD and ADD diagnosis
ADHD diagnosis Wrocław – how to recognize and confirm the disorder?
Diagnosis of ADHD in adults
The diagnostic process for ADHD in adults is multi-stage and includes at least three meetings:
- Psychological interview – The first stage is a psychological interview, during which the specialist collects information about the current functioning, reported difficulties and their impact on the patient’s daily life.
- Diagnostic Interview using the DIVA-5 – The next step is the structured DIVA-5 (Diagnostic Interview for ADHD in Adults), based on DSM-5 criteria. This tool enables a systematic assessment of ADHD symptoms in childhood and adulthood, including attention, impulsivity, hyperactivity, and executive function, as well as their impact on various areas of functioning.
- Diagnostic summary and clinical conclusions – Based on the collected material, the specialist performs a clinical analysis, formulates diagnostic conclusions and provides recommendations for further treatment.
- Psychiatric consultation (if indicated) – If ADHD is diagnosed, a psychiatric consultation is possible, during which the doctor can confirm the diagnosis and implement pharmacological treatment.
Diagnosis of ADHD in children
The diagnostic process for ADHD in children is based on a multi-source assessment of functioning and includes:
- Diagnostic interview with caregivers – The first stage is a detailed interview with parents or guardians regarding the child’s development, reported difficulties and their impact on functioning at home and at school.
- Clinical assessment of the child’s functioning – ADHD symptoms are analyzed in the areas of attention, hyperactivity, impulsivity and executive functions, taking into account their course over time and in various environments.
- Diagnostic Questionnaires (Conners-3) – The diagnostic process utilizes standardized tools, including the Conners-3, to assess the severity of symptoms and the child’s functioning in various contexts (home, school). The questionnaires are completed by parents and teachers.
- Formulating a diagnosis and recommendations – Based on all the collected material, the specialist performs a clinical analysis, determines the diagnosis or lack thereof, and presents recommendations for further diagnostic or therapeutic procedures.
